Sewerage tax
Property owners, including homeowners and commercial building owners, are required to pay a sewerage tax for their connection to the sewer system. High water users pay a rate based on their water consumption.
What is sewerage tax?
As the owner of a house, houseboat, or commercial property, you are required to pay a sewerage tax for your connection to the sewer system. The revenue from this tax is entirely allocated to maintaining the sewer system, processing wastewater, and managing stormwater, such as rain and snow. The sewerage tax comprises two components:- Owner's part: This is a fixed rate that only property owners, including homeowners, commercial building owners, and houseboat owners, must pay. This amount is included in the combined tax assessment.
- User's part: This part is for high water users (those using more than 300 m³ of water per year). It is not included in the combined tax assessment. High water users receive a separate declaration form in March/April.
Renters
As a renter, you only pay the sewerage tax if you are a high-water user, meaning you use more than 300 m³ of water per year. If your water use is less than 300 m³, you will not receive a tax assessment. An average multi-person household uses approximately 135 m³ per year.High-water users
If you are a high-water user (using 300 m³ or more annually), you pay a rate based on your water consumption (the user's part). If you are also an owner, you will pay both the owner's part and the user's part.Houseboats
Do you own a houseboat? You are required to pay the sewerage tax even if your houseboat is not connected to the sewer system. Houseboats use municipal water for drainage, which is part of the sewer system maintained by the municipality.Sewerage tax rates
The sewerage tax consists of two rates:- Owner's rate: Applicable to property owners of homes and commercial buildings.
- User's rate: Applicable to high-water users.
If you own a property on January 1st of the tax year, you are required to pay the sewerage tax.
Rate for high-water users
High-water users, such as large hospitality venues, industrial businesses, and car washes, also pay a user's part based on their water consumption. The more water you use, the higher the user's part of the sewerage tax. You are considered a high-water user if you use 301 m³ or more per year. There are seven rate classes for high water users (see table below).High-Water Usage Due to Hosting Ukrainian Refugees
If your water usage exceeds 301 m³ due to hosting refugees, inform the Tax Department. Your sewerage tax for high water usage will be adjusted accordingly for your 2023 assessment.
